Jigsaw Theory explained
The jigsaw theory is a collaborative teaching method that aims to eliminate hierarchy and increase collaboration by spreading the learning, and therefore the knowledge, in a group or team. Each member is responsible for developing a piece of knowledge, and sharing that learning back to the group, creating a more educated, and powerful ‘whole’.
An educational theory born in the 1970s, jigsaw theory was an attempt to break down racial segregation in classrooms, first coined by psychologist Dr Elliot Aronson. The results of the initial experiment showed a reduction in prejudice and absenteeism, an increase in self-esteem, improved test results, and better integration of students across racial divides.
It also achieved an increase in empathy, which reportedly decreased incidents of violence and racism within the school.

Our ambition at Jigsaw Theory is to work with businesses to increase equity, confidence, empathy and ethical practices.
Inclusive collaboration is at the heart of everything we do.
We peer-review designs and clarify goals, aspirations, risks and processes for complex projects. We strengthen collaboration by teams, and upskill project participants.
Inside consultancies, we provide additional capacity to achieve your strategic goals. We review your business operations, and design ways to remove friction and frustration, and get people working better, together.
We also have a network of superstars who we work alongside or can refer you to, if you have tasks that sit outside our wheelhouse.
