Stop the “busy work” and do the beneficial work

Running a busy practice involves lots of activities that take time – but they often aren’t the best use of your time.

I've been helping a client review the tools they use to manage their workflow and team. Their architecture practice had grown organically over time, and with a solid pipeline of work they needed to find efficiencies that could help them deliver successfully, and better manage their time.

There's a plethora of tools out there that claim wonderful things; improved cashflow, reduced procrastination or streamlined workflows. But where to start?

Our first step was to understand their business from a variety of angles:

  • Assess their current processes

  • Map their client journey

  • Identify and rank their priorities.

This knowledge allowed us to source and test relevant software solutions, generating a data set that plotted the possibilities against cost. We then assessed the cost impact of the implementation on the business to determine the way forward.

In this case, investing more money in well-targeted software each month freed up considerable labour hours, resulting in a significant overall saving to the business. That delivered more time to invest in the things that really matter.

Every practice can benefit from an honest review of what’s costing you time and taking you away from the things you and your team excel in. It’s hard to see when you’re busy, but we know where to look.

This is the work we love to do at Jigsaw Theory – working with your business and your people to provide additional capacity and independent advice on tackling a range of business challenges.

We all need to stop the 'busy work', and get on with the beneficial work.
